Tax on items coming from the USA
Summary: oldschoolcards_fr is interested in buying Pokémon cards in the United States and is concerned about potential taxes and customs fees. *miss-tigri* advises that there is no guarantee of avoiding extra charges and shares a useful link for more information about taxes. frelonverre notes that the fees can amount to around 30% of the item's price and shipping. felin12 suggests reading customs advice for online purchases. Finally, oldschoolcards_fr concludes that buying is not worthwhile because of the possible additional fees.
Hello,
I would be interested in buying 4 Pokemon cards sold by a private seller living in California.
The amount is currently €347.38 for the cards and €46.72 for shipping.
He can give me a 10% discount, which would make the cards profitable for me.
I wanted to know whether the taxes are included in the price or not?
In the shipping price, is insurance included?
To put it simply, if I go ahead with the purchase at the indicated price, will I have no unpleasant surprises when it arrives in France for delivery? (tax, customs, carrier fees, ...).
I have already ordered from Canada and I had no problem or unpleasant surprise because everything is included in the price (VAT + insurance).
Thank you in advance for your reply.

OP1 year agoThanks for your reply.
If I understood correctly, that adds 20% to the total price, which corresponds to VAT (the 4 cards + shipping costs) + no customs tax but a possible additional fee from the carrier.
So, I'll pass; it's not worth it.
Have a good day.

How are the additional costs that could be applied calculated?
I know that before, very small parcels were checked very little, but what about today? Back then (2011/2014) I made several purchases of small parcels from the USA and I never had any taxes, customs fees,...

it all depends on the price of your shipment, count on 30% of the item's price plus the shipping cost

No, it’s not guaranteed that the mail carrier won’t ask you for fees upon delivery.

If you pay VAT twice, you can request a refund.
