Portrait in a Cabinet of "Douanier Rousseau". By Gaston Astruc in Laval. Circa 1907.
Summary: quentinrota shares concerns about a photograph sold on eBay, supposedly by Henri Rousseau, which has been challenged as fake. After informing the seller without seeing any change, lingma85 suggests reporting the listing to eBay and the relevant authorities. Anonymous User mentions that the photo looks more like John Burroughs, which quentinrota agrees with. noctisauxroses questions quentinrota’s intention, recommending contacting eBay customer service directly to resolve the issue.

Hello everyone,
I sent a message about a CDV sold on eBay, and here is my text to the seller:
Hello,
I can assure you that this portrait does not depict the Douanier Rousseau; besides, at that price you would have already sold it. Moreover, the Lavallois photographer Gaston Astruc only stayed in business until the year 1896. I advise you to consult the Portraits Sépia site, which will give you the information you need: Son of a pair of dramatic artists, Isidore Gaston Astruc was born on May 20, 1868 in Montpellier (Hérault). He married on December 26, 1893 in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique), where he was a photographer (employee). In 1895, he took over the photography studio of Gallas located at 9, rue du Britais in Laval (Mayenne). He would hardly have time to make a name for himself there. He died on June 25, 1896 at the age of 28. His widow, Marie Joséphine Allain, who was a mail carrier when she married him, carried on the business until the end of the century, then sold the business assets to Joseph Cranéguy: https://www.portraitsepia.fr/photographes/astruc/ Kind regards. This seller continues to sell this photograph as that of Henri Rousseau, known as the Douanier, a naive painter born in Laval, when we all know that this is FALSE...
Attempted fraud, intentional or not?
Thank you for your replies.

·3 years agoI don't understand what you expect from Ebay members here.
If it's to know whether the seller is scamming knowingly or not, bear in mind that we're not in his head^^
If you want the sale to stop, because you have proof of what you're saying, no need to "pollute" here, there is Ebay customer service, and the competent State authorities 😉

You wrote----> "Attempted scam intended or not?"
A question only the seller could answer...
But as for a fake.. you have the option of reporting the listing on eBay. and then don't forget that buyers have a fairly strong means of defense---> the DGCCRF.... you shouldn't be afraid to contact them...
So, if you're sure of yourself... if you have proof of what you're saying, you can build a case and present it to the DGCCRF in your city. But before acting, you need to warn the seller of your intentions so as not to "catch them off guard"... You will decide how to proceed based on their response.

OP3 years agoGood evening, I am 100/100 certain that the photographic portrait offered for sale does not depict Le Douanier Rousseau. In addition, I know the Laval photographers of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century well, I am a collector. I warned the seller, he replied to me "Thank you for these details", that's all, but he did not change the listing: [Lien], I am not used to "reporting a scam, intentional or not", but here it is really too obvious! In any case, no one will be fooled, connoisseurs and fans of Douanier Rouseau will not buy this photograph...
Yours sincerely.

·3 years agoHello,
Oddly enough, this photo makes me think more of the naturalist John Burroughs.
