Action required: please update the requested information
Summary: maggy2917 is worried about having to provide ID to eBay after reaching a transaction limit and asks whether it’s legal. lingma85 comments that it’s an internal procedure that you can accept or not, while koalagris shares a link for more information. In the end, maggy2917 discovers a European directive allowing platforms to request proof and expresses reservations about some company practices.
Occasional seller, recently I reached the limit of 30 transactions in one year.
I think that makes sense, that I’m asked for my tax ID number, since eBay is required to pass data on to the tax authorities.
But now I’m being asked to upload an ID document as well.
1. Does eBay have the right to ask me to upload an ID document?
2. How long will this copy be stored?
I’m really hesitating between uploading this copy against my will, or stopping selling on eBay.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

OP2 years agoThanks for this link, @koalagris.
After a few days of research, I finally think I found the European directive regarding platform reporting: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/FR/TXT/?uri=CELEX:32021L0514.
So, platforms are authorized to request supporting documents.
And to come back to @lingma85's reply, there are companies that make requests that go against the law. If you accept internal rules as "law", that's your choice....

Mentor2 years agoHello @maggy2917
It shocks you that a website asks you for an ID document to verify it.... fine... !
- but you're indifferent to it (or think it's normal...) when the cashier at a supermarket asks you for it....
I'll admit I don't understand your reasoning.

OP2 years agoHello @@lingma85
I've never had a cashier ask me for my ID, because I don't pay by check. And a cashier isn't going to take a copy of an ID.
Could you give me a link to a law that says eBay is required to ask me for a copy of my ID?
I'm trying to leave as few copies of my ID as possible with companies, so that's why I'm asking.
Thanks

" provide a link to a law that says eBay is required to ask me for a copy of my ID?"
There is no specific law on the matter...
- Just an internal policy that you either accept or not...
If you refuse it... you just move on, simple as that...
