Understanding additional fees when making an international purchase
Summary: chicune800 shares an international buying experience where an initial agreed price of US$500 went up to US$600 at checkout. They’re wondering whether this change is due to customs fees, VAT, or other hidden costs, and are looking for advice on how to better anticipate these charges in the future.
Hello everyone,
I wanted to share a situation I recently experienced and see if anyone has had a similar experience. I made an offer on an item for US$500 and the seller accepted. However, when finalizing the purchase, the amount changed to US$600. The item comes from the United States, and I’m wondering if this is due to customs fees or 20% VAT.
Could someone explain why this price change might happen? Are there other hidden fees when buying internationally? How can I better anticipate these costs in the future?
Thanks in advance for your advice and experiences!

Mentor1 week agoHello @chicune800
VAT gets added, and there will probably also be customs clearance fees requested by the carrier
