While the bidding is taking place on an item, it often happens that the number of bidders mentioned in the top banner is lower than the number of members who have actually placed bids on that lot. One might think this doesn't matter at all, but it does. On the one hand, this seems to reveal a malfunction in the system; on the other hand, it can mislead those who are interested as to the number of other people who also want the item.
How can this be explained?
