Fedex asks to go through a freight forwarder to clear 8 rough agates
Hello,
I bought 8 raw agates in Turkey, big stones, for a total of €179, I’m a French private individual.
Fedex is asking me to go through a customs broker to clear customs, but it costs a lot.
Is that legal? Do I really have to do that?
Thanks.

OP2 years agoI’m happy to pay the customs fees, but not the forwarding agent’s service fees, which are €400, because FedEx isn’t authorized to clear semiprecious stones. After researching and calling the customs service at Charles de Gaulle, it would seem that this is an internal FedEx issue (they shouldn’t accept a parcel if they can’t handle everything from A to Z) and that I shouldn’t be the one paying the forwarding fees.
But I’m probably going to get stuck in several weeks of back-and-forth with the administration.

Unfortunately yes > Turkey not being in the European Union
Have to pay

OP2 years agoI paid the VAT, collected by ebay with proof of taxation.
The problem is that Fedex is asking to go through a freight forwarder to carry out additional steps; after some research, it seems that Fedex is trying to shift some of its responsibilities onto the consumer.

Mentor2 years agoYes, VAT > 20 %
But there are still customs fees of about 30% at your expense
