Warranties on purchased items: Your experience and advice

When you buy items, whether online or in-store, what are your main concerns regarding warranties? Have you ever had experiences where a warranty really made a difference? For a warranty to be valid, it must come from an authorized professional merchant approved by the manufacturer...
Otherwise.. there is a risk of ending up with bogus warranties that are useless...
On the other hand, knowing that some devices also have planned obsolescence... it is better to choose labeled devices rather than others from faraway countries, whose replacement will make the initial purchase more expensive because of their uncertain lifespan.
There is a lot to say about warranties...
