Ebay has been rolling out automatic payments on ebay.com since around December 2024. That means Ebay will automatically charge one of the saved bank cards for the amount of the winning bid or accepted offer. If there isn’t enough money on the first card, ebay will try a second saved card if needed. So all of this happens without going through the checkout process, which gives the buyer time to plan to add funds and convert them to dollars to complete the transaction based on the final bid amount. No option to combine purchases with the same seller to save on shipping. When you win an auction on ebay.com, auctions end at 3 a.m. and you’re given 1 hour to react, except we’re asleep. So we wake up in the morning and discover that the card has been charged. As a result, since I didn’t have time to add funds to my Revolut card, it’s going to charge my local credit card with fees from my bank and paypal. When you try to contact the sellers, either they accept the cancellation and I have to ask them for an immediate purchase afterward (best case), or they aren’t aware of the auto payment (not informed by ebay, which has it enabled by default on ebay) and in some cases prefer to send the item without my agreement and refuse returns. Of course, you can’t identify on the sales pages which sellers use auto payment. RESULT: I have drastically reduced my purchases on EBAY, I have a lot of open disputes, and I get into arguments with sellers. I have contacted ebay customer service dozens of times by chat or phone, in France and in the USA. They are completely incompetent. One time out of two, they hang up on me or leave the chat because they can’t help me and have no solution. But several agents still told me they had quite a few complaints like mine about auto payments.
