I'm afraid I've been taken for a ride....
Summary: kaalysta* shares her concern about a purchase made on eBay of a designer necklace for her daughter. She has run into several problems: unexpected import fees, a seller relisting the supposedly unique item, and the inability to cancel the transaction even though the shipment is marked as pending. Several participants, including koalagris, francois-o, and lingma85, explain to her that she will have to wait until the delivery date before she can open a dispute to get a refund. kaalysta* expresses her frustration with eBay’s policies and fears receiving a counterfeit. The discussion ends with the fact that there is unfortunately no way to cancel the transaction immediately.
Hello everyone,
A few years ago I was quite active on Ebay, then I admit I kind of let it slide, then came back since a famous site no longer accepts PayPal. And I’m afraid I’m a bit rusty and wasn’t careful enough.
My daughter wanted for Christmas a necklace by a famous designer (which I find overpriced for costume jewelry but oh well...). So I found a listing in the USA and made a purchase offer to the seller by sending her a message. The seller didn’t reply or accept and, since my daughter really wanted it, I bought it outright at the listed price. And I paid immediately by PayPal.
First bad surprise: when I paid there was €10 of VAT and it said I wouldn’t have any additional fees, but now it says I may have to pay import charges. Huh?
Second surprise, and here the seller is at fault, I see that she has relisted my necklace. The same one, the same photos, and she’s finally contacting me to tell me she’ll send the item next week even though she had said it would ship within 3 days. It’s rarely the kind of thing you have in duplicate or triplicate in your wardrobe....
Third bad surprise: I check whether I can cancel this transaction because it seems suspicious to me, and I can’t because “the item would already have been shipped” - on the day of purchase - even though on the Ebay page it clearly says “shipping pending” and, by the seller’s own admission, she doesn’t plan to send it before next week
Anyway, I’m no longer very familiar with the ins and outs of Ebay, does all of this seem normal to you? And what do you advise me to do? I admit I’m a bit lost and I’d rather not lose my money than see my little girl disappointed if she doesn’t get her necklace for her birthday....
Thank you for your help
Carine

a) - As for extra charges and import fees, this is nothing new; it simply means you bought abroad and that you are liable for VAT and customs clearance as the importer.
b) - The fact that you see an identical item for sale means that this seller has several of them and relists the listing as sales are made (and under the same item no. ) -
On the other hand, if you say ..." It's rarely the kind of item you have in duplicate or triplicate in your wardrobe " ... it may perhaps be a copy (or a fake, which is the same thing.)...
c) - for cancellation... if the item has gone.... you have to wait until the delivery date has passed before taking action if there is no delivery.... then you will do what is in this link---> Get help with an item that hasn't arrived | eBay
Respect the deadlines... you are protected by the site for 30 days following the potential delivery date. You must respect the dates shown on your order and don't let your seller "pull the wool over your eyes"
If the item has arrived but doesn't suit you, it will be here-----> Return an item for a refund | eBay
Best regards

OP2 years agoThanks to everyone for your replies.
It’s a shame to say at the time of purchase that VAT is included in the price and that there will be no extra charges ... if there are import fees that may end up increasing the final purchase price.
As for the seller, she has already sold an item with exactly the same title as the necklace I bought (and that the buyer received). So she sold me one and is putting it back up for sale. That makes me very worried about receiving a counterfeit. If I had wanted a counterfeit, I could have bought one on a Chinese site ....
I don’t understand why Ebay refuses to cancel the transaction on the pretext that the item has been shipped when it hasn’t been shipped!!! It is still awaiting dispatch. There is no tracking or shipping number. And the seller confirms it.
I don’t want to wait until January to receive a piece of junk (with customs fees on top) just to then get a refund. Isn’t there another way?

Hello @kaalysta* ,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having a bad experience on eBay.
First of all, I want to reassure you that you are protected by our guarantee; if you do not receive your order, you will get a refund.
You can open a dispute for item not received the day after the estimated latest delivery date.
Once the dispute is opened, the seller has 3 working days to issue the refund. If this deadline passes, you can ask eBay to step in.
Regarding import VAT, eBay is required to collect it at the time of purchase. However, for any purchase outside the EU, there are import fees collected by customs.
In the event that customs charges you VAT a second time, send us proof of the double payment and we will refund you. (Note that only the VAT can be refunded.)
I can look into this in more detail for you if you wish. You can contact me on our social networks: Facebook / Twitter / Instagram
Or simply contact customer service by clicking => "Contact us" at the bottom of our help page
Best regards
