Modification of an ongoing bid
Hello everyone.
I’ve just put an item up for sale by offering it at auction with no other purchase option (buy it now, buyer offer, etc.). I’ve just received a private message with an offer, even though two bids have already been placed. Am I required to wait until the auction ends, or can I end the sale by accepting this person’s purchase offer?

The "official" direct offers are only for immediate purchases, not for auctions.
So here it's just an "unofficial" price proposal (which commits to nothing) via eBay messaging; in fact, you need to invite the buyer who contacted you to take part in the auction, and may the best one win...
