Summary: esencia_fr asked for advice on an eBay sales situation where a buyer requested a return and refund two months after receiving the wrong item. lingma85 said that eBay would not take action because the claim deadline had passed, but mentioned that PayPal claims have a 180-day deadline. francexpressdeal pointed out that a seller cannot know buyers’ payment method on eBay and questioned the seller’s current refusal to accept a return, even though the initial mistake came from them. esencia_fr clarified that they were willing to correct the error within a reasonable time and expressed doubts about the condition of the item after 60 days. The discussion highlights the importance of communication and respecting deadlines in online transactions.
I’d like your thoughts as sellers regarding a situation.
I made a sale in mid-November 2025. When shipping, I made a mistake by sending a different item from the one ordered.
That very day, I contacted the buyer, acknowledged the error, and offered a complete solution: return at my expense + sending the correct item.
Despite that, I received no response from the buyer, nor any request for a return or dispute within eBay’s deadlines.
The item was delivered normally, then more than two months later, the buyer suddenly came back asking for a return label and a refund.
At this point, eBay’s return period is well and truly over and no steps had been taken before then.
In your opinion:
Am I within my rights to refuse the refund after the deadline?
Have you ever encountered this kind of situation and how did eBay handle it?
I should note that all communication took place via eBay messages.
Thanks in advance for your feedback and shared experiences.

As far as eBay is concerned... the claim deadlines have passed..
- therefore eBay won't do anything...
On the other hand, if there's a payment via PayPal.... the buyer has 180 days after payment to make a claim for a refund for a non-compliant item.
( same if there was payment by credit card.. that depends on the bank/credit card agreement )

OP6 months agoI have no record of a PayPal payment.
It seems to me it was a card payment.
Your reply confirms what I thought.
No news and then two months later the demand to be refunded and to receive a return label, I find the process surprising.
Thank you.

"I have no record of a PayPal payment.

A seller on eBay has no way of knowing the buyers' payment method.
As for the fact that you have no record of a payment on PayPal, that’s normal since eBay only settles your sales by bank transfer.
Regarding the buyer's request, yes, it's late, but originally you were willing to accept a return. So why is that no longer the case today when the mistake still came from you in the first place?

OP6 months agoThen your point is relevant, yes I was willing to refund the buyer or send him the correct item at my expense, but within a reasonable timeframe and not 60 days later with no news whatsoever. What happened during those 60 days? I can doubt the condition of the item if I accept its return. In this case, if we accept a return after two months, we can extend that to as much as six months.
In any case, I am still communicating and making the effort to find solutions on my side, but it is also important to point out that it is not normal to reappear two months later.
Best regards.

All the more so since you don’t know the reasons why your buyer is only getting back to you now...
As for the item’s condition, asking the buyer was the first thing to do.

OP6 months agoYou can work in communications and still come to this support forum for advice. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. As for the item’s condition, sorry, but a buyer can lie. Reappearing two months later is more than suspicious.
