who pays for return shipping?
Summary: deniseclo sold an item on eBay and is accepting its return because the buyer doesn’t like it. They’re trying to clarify who pays the return shipping, since eBay’s instructions aren’t clear. lingma85 explains that if the buyer sends the item back because they don’t like it, they have to pay the return shipping. However, when deniseclo offered a refund, they noticed that eBay does not refund the original shipping charges. They were advised to contact customer service, which deniseclo did, confirming that eBay’s policy does not provide for refunding shipping costs in these circumstances. They conclude that they’ll lose those charges unless they negotiate with the buyer before the return.
hello I sold an item, the buyer is asking to return it. The reason they selected in their initial request is "I don't like the item". In the text they mention defects that I dispute but I don't intend to go any further and I accept the return, it's simpler for everyone. However, eBay's message on this subject isn't clear: who has to pay for the return in this case? should I buy a return label? thank you for enlightening me, my searches in the help section don't mention any difference depending on the reason given for requesting a return. Thank you

Mentor1 year agoHello @deniseclo
Your buyer initially chose ---> "I don't like the item"...
- therefore the return shipping costs are at their expense.
Return information (for sellers) | eBay
it doesn't seem to indicate that the item is not as described..

OP1 year agoHELLO Indeed he had to buy a return label himself. But once I refunded, I realize that eBay only credited me back the commission fees he had been charged, but not my original shipping costs, which I had paid. Is this normal under eBay rules? when the buyer returns the item just because they changed their mind or don't like it. Thanks for the clarification because I paid about 5.50 euros for shipping. Best regards

You should check this with Customer Service here---> eBay Customer Service
Preferably contact them during business hours and ask to be called back.
They will correct it if it needs to be corrected because they have the means to look at your account, which nobody here does.
Best regards

OP1 year agothanks for all your emails. I spoke to eBay on the phone and indeed, their policy states that I lose the shipping costs even if it’s simply the buyer who changes their mind and I accept the return. Unless I negotiate with them beforehand, before the return is finalized. Too bad for me then. Best regards
