Delivery service for €344
Summary: flochi64 sold speakers for €100 to an African buyer via an online platform, but was surprised by the €344.91 shipping costs quoted by Chronopost. koalagris advised checking whether the buyer had covered these fees and suggested buying the shipping label directly from the carrier. *miss-tigri* recommended canceling the transaction and focusing on local sales or sales within the EU, which flochi64 decided to do. The discussion reflects flochi64’s first experience selling internationally, and they expressed gratitude for the advice received.
I’m a seller, I just sold speakers (type: SoundSticks II) from Harman/Kardon for €100.
My buyer is African (who has good ratings).
When creating the shipping label, in the section Select a shipping service > Select a delivery method > Shipping service (selected): Chrono Express from Chronopost, the site shows me a shipping service price of €344.91.
I just want to know if it’s normal to pay that much for a product worth €100? And then get reimbursed by the platform when the transaction is finished?
Best regards

Mentor5 months agoHello @flochi64
Is it paid or not? If so, how much?
= You will only recover the shipping costs if you billed them to the buyer.
The buyer should have contacted you BEFORE buying to find out the postage to their country (I doubt they’ll agree to pay €345).
There’s nothing forcing you to go through eBay’s postage platform: you can buy the shipping label directly on the carrier’s website, then enter the tracking number on eBay.
That said, the value of the item doesn’t seem compatible with shipping to Africa, which will inevitably be expensive, so it would probably be wiser to cancel the transaction (see the "help" section at the bottom right: type "cancel a transaction"), the buyer can also submit a cancellation request.
Also see about setting up your account to define which countries you accept shipping to or not:

OP5 months agoThe buyer paid for the product €100 + €10 in additional fees (applied by myself) + €14 for shipping with UPS.
But for now I haven't paid anything.
Also, it's my very first time selling abroad and it's only my second product that I've sold on the platform.
Anyway, thank you for your help because I'm very wary

Mentor5 months agoAttention @flochi64
You will only receive what the buyer paid, minus eBay's commission.
It's better to cancel the transaction and limit yourself to a sale in France or, at a stretch, in the EU.

OP5 months agoSo I’m going to cancel the sale.
In any case, thanks for all your advice. 🙏🏻
