tax paid upon receipt of a package
Summary: A participant in France explains that they had a bad experience after buying an item on eBay in England. Although they had already paid VAT at the time of purchase, they were asked to pay an additional 12 euros in tax upon delivery, which had never happened to them before. jacquelinedu36 mentions that this tax is due to Brexit, since the United Kingdom is no longer in the European Union. Another participant, *miss-tigri*, suggests that errors in the VAT declaration can lead to such fees and recommends checking eBay’s policies. In the end, the participant discovers that it is an import tax, and although the seller refunded them, they express frustration at these unexpected costs.
hello, I'd like a sensible explanation, I'm in France and recently I made a purchase on eBay, the item was in England, at the time of payment I paid the VAT, that was fine, but the day before yesterday when the package was delivered the postman asked me for 12 euros in tax!! this is not the first time I've bought in England and I have never had to pay any tax on arrival, since each time I pay the VAT when paying the invoice, was there a bug or is the French state trying once again to rip us off and take our money unfairly?

Mentor2 years agoHello
The carrier handling customs clearance is asking for fees.
But if you think you paid it twice, see the bottom of this link

OP2 years agohello, thanks for the reply, but for this purchase I've got a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, paying 12 euros in customs fees for an item that originally cost me 22 euros, Nono the king of brown-nosing is really scraping the bottom of the barrel !!

Mentor2 years agoHello,
And yes, there is customs duty to pay > England is no longer part of Europe

OP2 years agohello, sorry for the delay in replying to you, but I couldn't figure out how to do it, so first of all thanks for the reply, but I remain skeptical insofar as I've already made several purchases from English sellers without having any extra fees upon receipt (VAT being collected when paying the invoice) , which is why I don't understand why this time with this seller the post office asked me for 12 euros !! ,I informed the seller and he was fair since he refunded me this amount ,

It happens (often) that the seller does not enter the information on the VAT charged correctly, which is then requested upon delivery..
If the postman hadn’t refunded it to you, you could have made the request..

OP2 years agoI was able to see the postwoman this morning who had brought me the parcel, and I asked her what the amount she had asked me corresponded to; it’s not VAT, but an import tax!! This is the first time since I’ve been buying in England that I’ve had to pay an import tax, could it be Nono the king of brown-nosing who’s hunting for money everywhere? It’s enough to put you off buying in England. The item at the start was 20 euros, but plus postage, plus VAT, plus this famous tax, it ended up costing me almost 50 euros
