VAT on the purchase of a second-hand item from the USA
Summary: jeanjean1337 expresses confusion about the need to pay VAT on the purchase of a second-hand item from the USA, wondering why this applies instead of only customs duties. *miss-tigri* replies by explaining that VAT applies to both second-hand and new items, and recommends checking the tax office website or a specific link for more information.
Hello everyone,
I don’t understand why I have to pay VAT (?????) on the purchase of a used item (in the sense that it was bought in one place A and is now being resold by another professional seller) coming from the USA?
What is this VAT about?
It’s a used item, so at worst I was expecting to pay customs duties, but VAT ????
Besides, there is no VAT on second-hand/vintage goods in France, so why would there be in this case?
Thanks,
Pierre
