DHL customs duties
Summary: shiningcelebi7 bought an item for €800 on eBay and was surprised by €173 in customs fees requested by DHL, even though VAT had already been paid at the time of purchase. Other participants explain that additional charges are common when buying from outside the EU. It seems that eBay did not declare the VAT to customs, a recognized issue. shiningcelebi7 contacted eBay, which is working with DHL to resolve the problem without paying again. One participant shared a link to request a refund of VAT paid twice when ordering from Japan.
I bought an item for €800 on eBay.
I just received an SMS from DHL asking me to pay… €173 in customs fees !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I contacted the seller.
No way am I paying €173. Nothing was mentioned in the listing.
Have you ever dealt with this scam?

I bookmarked this link for all the times I order parts from Japan and get charged twice; it happens almost systematically. I pay the customs fees from DHL, FedEx, etc., then I send their invoice through this link and explain that I paid twice and would like to get refunded. It has always gone well so far and this has happened many times.

OP2 years agoWell-known problem on the eBay and carrier side. I'm calling eBay, who will call DHL to unblock the parcel. I'm a pain in the ass, but imagine the number of people who pay without questioning it... double VAT, free gift LOOOOL

It’s not the first time you’ve bought in Japan

let's keep it simple, if you don't pay, you get nothing, the parcel gets sent back and you've lost 800 bucks

OP2 years agoActually, this is apparently a well-known issue: eBay doesn’t declare VAT to customs.
So they’re charging it twice.
I called eBay, they’re reaching out to the carrier, I don’t spend a cent and I get my package in 2 days. Thanks!

·2 years agoHello,
Purchase in Japan = customs + 20% VAT
You are the importer so you pay, otherwise nothing
shiningcelebi7
OP2 years agoThe DHL invoice mentions 90% VAT fees (already paid).
eBay does not declare the VAT collected to customs.
Apparently a well-known issue on eBay's and the carrier's side.

·2 years agoHello
This isn't a scam ..When you buy outside the EU, there is always VAT and taxes added on, and you're not supposed to ignore that.
If you paid for it on eBay, you can request a refund
