auctions
Summary: sirjames60 doesn’t understand the “direct offer” option in the context of online auctions and asks for clarification. koalagris explains that a direct offer is equivalent to a buy-it-now purchase, thereby ending the auction, while automatic bidding keeps the maximum bid amounts confidential. Other participants, including frelonverre, point out the complexities of the auction system and some non-standard practices, but nareio and felin12 confirm that the seller’s acceptance of a direct offer cancels the ongoing auction. The discussion also revolves around suspicious bidder behavior that could distort the system.
I don't really understand either the point or the concept of the "make a direct offer" option in the case of an item put up for auction. Can someone enlighten me? I'll try to make myself understood with an example.
-An item is put up for auction at 10 euros, duration: 6 days. 1st day:;I am at this price while placing a maximum bid of 15 euros which will therefore not appear yet
- 2nd day: someone makes an offer at 12 euros. Will the seller know about my 15-euro bid?
- Suppose not, and that he accepts the offer. Will this end the auction? Will this have the effect of generating the appearance of my maximum bid? Can he then go back on his decision?
- Or will the offer only appear at the auction end date, and only if it is higher than the highest bid.
Thank you for your clarification.

·2 years agoAs for the point of the thing, well, that depends... on the buyer's and seller's motivations, on the item... I guess there must be some, since it works.... but to answer you, we'd need statistics and surveys ...if anyone has any...

·2 years agoHello
@sirjames60
- 2nd day: someone makes an offer at 12 euros. Will the seller know about my bid at 15 euros ?
No!
Let's imagine that not, and that he accepts the offer. Will that put an end to the auction?
Yes! The fact that the seller accepts the offer acts like a buy-it-now, which @koalagris explained to you
Will that have the effect of generating the appearance of my maximum bid?
No!
Can he then change his mind?
No!

My mistake in the process
if your bid is placed first, the direct offer option disappears

·2 years agoAnd if a bid comes in after a direct offer is made but before the seller accepts it, the offer will become void; only bidding will then be possible.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that but it still makes sense
-I'm not a big user (buying or selling) of the auction format and even less of the direct offer option

Good evening ??? 😕
No wonder it seems unclear to you, since you're confusing automatic bidding and direct offer...
direct offer = immediate purchase (game over as far as bidding goes, the item is sold)
if you bid + than the current bid = automatic bidding (and no one - not even the seller - will know how much you bid until the amount is exceeded)

OP2 years agoPlease take the trouble to calmly reread my post with a clear head. You will then understand (perhaps) that I am talking about auctions with a "direct offer" option and will perhaps then answer the question asked.

- 2nd day: someone makes an offer of 12 euros. Will the seller know about my bid at 15 euros?
the seller won't have seen your bid at 15 euros but you will be in the lead at 12.50, i.e. one bid increment
on the other hand, if your opponent is in a hurry and puts 50 euros, of course the seller will assign the item to him

Please take the trouble to read the links posted previously 😉
Auction WITH direct offer option
if direct offer accepted by the seller = immediate purchase (so item sold: auction over)
it's really not hard to understand...
sirjames60
OP2 years agoWhen it is explained clearly and not in telegraphic style, yes. It is also so easy to understand that the different people who replied to me sometimes get themselves mixed up too

What’s not clear?

·2 years agoHello, @sirjames60
I’m going to rephrase for you what @koalagris told you.
The purchase offer is only possible as long as no bid has been placed. The "offer" option disappears.
As soon as an offer is accepted, no bids are possible, even if they are higher than the accepted offer: the bidding listing "disappears"
Another problem: when there are bids, no one can access the maximum amounts of the automatic bids, except for those who placed them. That has nothing to do with "offers".
So, the case you mention is impossible.

·2 years ago" When there are bids, no one can access the maximum amounts of the automatic bids, except those who set them. This has nothing to do with the "offers".
So the case you mention is impossible "
Well, it’s perfectly possible. All you have to do is place a much higher bid. The previous bid is displayed and so you know the maximum bid of the last bidder.
Then all you have to do is retract yours to go back down to the previous bids before your last offer.
For obvious reasons, I won’t put the link that allows you to do this, but know that it’s perfectly possible and предусмотрено in a procedure somewhere on eBay.
So if you think that’s cheating, we agree, but everything is debatable and besides, this possibility is not unlimited.
There you go
nareio
·2 years agoYes. So what ?? You think the other bidders don't realize it ?? And that they don't have a workaround ?? All you can gain from this story is ending up having to pay a lot more for an item than it's worth...
Hello anyway...

So yes, that's totally possible. All you need to do is place a much higher bid. The previous bid is displayed and you therefore know the maximum bid of the last bidder.

Judgment as a seller :
Bidder with suspicious behavior
=
Withdrawal of bids and ban from buying.
Benefit (seller)
=
-Avoids the risk of non-payment in case of winning
-Avoids the risk of an unjustified return request
-Avoids the risk of chargeback
-gets a good night's sleep

It happened to me in 2009: I bought a Mercedes 300 TD 4 Matic on eBay. I wanted to put in 500 euros to start, and I made a mistake and entered 5000 euros. I retracted the bid, but in the meantime I had seen the reserve price at 1400. I managed to talk on the phone with the seller and decided to take his car, so we let the bidding run its course, except the price was still below the reserve price. So I called a buddy and we drove the price up to the famous reserve price. I went to pick it up, I repaired it, and I only sold it in 2022

·2 years agoGood evening @frelonverre
I’ve also already messed up on a bid entry.
But as a seller, you notice when a big bid is placed, then withdrawn, and comes back with a price adjusted just above the winning bid.
Also, when you work in a category with loyal customers
it’s better to get rid of this kind of behavior if you want to keep your integrity.
kind regards
