Additional tax payment

I bought an item in the United Kingdom, and on the invoice I have both the sale price and the VAT. I had a nasty surprise when the package was delivered: the postman told me to pay a tax of €23 to get it back. This wasn’t specified at the time of purchase. Is this normal?

VAT and customs are not the same thing, the UK is no longer part of the eurozone

If you paid VAT twice, check with eBay for a refund
