EBAY applies VAT on sales between private individuals
Summary: powelz77777 asks a question about eBay’s application of VAT on sales made by private individuals. felin12 and francois-o explain that VAT is applied to sales within the European Union and that this is normal for eBay as a professional company. However, myiservice and hqt2005 challenge this practice for sales between private individuals and second-hand products, mentioning personal experiences such as account closure following a complaint. frelonverre adds that all intermediary sites collect VAT, suggesting buying at garage sales to avoid these fees.
Hello,
Sorry in advance for my ignorance, but is it normal for EBAY to apply VAT on sales made by a private individual?
Best regards

all sites charge VAT, since the sites are only intermediaries, even if the item
has changed hands many times
otherwise buy at flea markets and pay in cash

·3 years agoNo, they do not have the right to collect VAT on your sales, especially for private-to-private sales.
On the other hand, they can collect it if the professional seller is subject to VAT
I requested a refund, and in response they closed my eBay account and froze my funds

Hello,
Yes, this is normal. Purchases made by consumers in the European Union are subject to value-added tax (VAT). The VAT rate applied is defined by the destination country of the parcel and depends on the items sold.
Here is the link to our help page with more information on this subject: https://www.ebay.fr/help/buying/paying-items/payer-les-taxes-sur-les-achats-effectus-sur-ebay?id=4771&st=3&pos=1&query=Payer%20les%20taxes%20sur%20les%20achats%20effectu%C3%A9s%20sur%20eBay&intent=tva&lucenceai=lucenceai&docId=HELP1425

If you are referring to the VAT noted on the transaction fee details;
yes, that is normal, since Ebay is a business they show their VAT on the invoice (transaction summary) issued for you.
