Abusive return for defective item
Summary: pentiumpro57 sold a car stereo on eBay and received a return request from the buyer for a supposedly non-working product. *miss-tigri* advised pentiumpro57 to accept the return at their own expense in order to avoid an automatic refund from eBay. After accepting the return, pentiumpro57 received a defective car stereo that was different from the one sold. pentiumpro57 is wondering what remedies are possible against this abuse, although frelonverre seems to indicate that no remedy is available.
Hello,
I recently sold a car stereo to someone on eBay. As usual, I thoroughly tested the product and took a video of it working before shipping.
It’s an original car stereo that needs to communicate over the car’s bus, tested on mine without any issue.
However, as soon as they received it, the buyer opened a return request for a non-functioning product, with a photo of the car stereo’s serial number (fair enough).
What’s the best move to make:
- Wait for eBay to step in (how can I provide them the video?) for the return request?
- Pay for a return at my own expense and open a claim upon receipt?
I’m not used to disputes/returns, so if you could shed some light on it, thanks.

To ask eBay to step in, you'll need photos of your device and the serial number if there is one, as well as photos of what you received ..
You can involve the Fevad or file a complaint for fraud.

In the case of a dispute for a non-compliant item, it’s better to accept the return of the item at your expense because if you refuse, eBay refunds the buyer with the blocked money without having to send your item back to you.
Check the car stereo on receipt and open a dispute if necessary with before-and-after photos ..

OP1 month agoHello,
Thank you for your feedback and for taking the time to reply to me.
I accepted the return request; the customer sent me back their old faulty car stereo instead of mine.
Do you know what my options are? I suppose I can report it to eBay, but I don't really believe it'll help. Is there a better way?
Best regards
