Sale made at the end of the year
Hello,
I sold an item on December 30th of last year. The item was paid for the same day by the buyer.
By the time the item was sent and the funds were released, we had moved into 2026. So I would like to know whether the sale counts for tax year 2025 or 2026.
Thank you.

Normally this sale paid in 2025... counts for the reference fiscal year.
It's the payment date that matters... but with the ebay system, you'll receive the funds in 2026...
- this will be part of the carryovers in 2026 on the bank account, if you have detailed accounting...
Best regards

OP9 months agoGood evening,
Thank you for your response. Yes, indeed, the funds will arrive in 2026, but are you sure that it's this date that matters? Isn't the buyer's payment date the one that takes priority?
Kind regards

"this sale paid in 2025... counts for the reference tax year.

- so 2025... it is the buyer's payment directly related to the sale that is counted and that makes up your turnover...
But in your accounting entries (if your accounts are on a real or simplified real basis.) it is obvious that you will record an entry in the 2026 bank ledger for the transfer of funds made by the site..
And that is how it is for all purchases or sales carried out on the last day of an accounting year (whether it starts in January or during the calendar year)..
If you are in A.E. you will find the amount of this sale on ebay's statement.. an amount you should follow to avoid misunderstandings.. but which must be monitored/checked like a hawk...
Best regards
